What is Pathways to Employment?
This Project is funded by the City of Toronto to support the training, licensing, certification and employment of refugees and vulnerable equity seeking newcomers through skills training and employment support. There are two trainings provided under this Project, the Basic Security Guard Training and Esthetics and Wellness Short Courses.
What is the Eligibility?
- Participant is a refugee or a newcomer who have been living in Canada for less than 5 years and is a current recipient of OW (Ontario Works)
- Must have English skills level 4 and above
- Housed in a permanent accommodation
- Must be eligible to work in Canada
- Physically fit to work
- Not currently working or studying
- Commitment to attend the core program and post-program activities (must be able to complete the activities prior to actual training)
- Interested to be trained and employed in the following occupations: Basic Security Guard or Esthetics and Wellness
- Must complete all assessments required
Who are the Target Participants?
We accept participants who are currently receiving Ontario Works (not ODSP) AND who are:
- Newcomers who are: Permanent Residents, Convention Refugees or Protected Persons, Refugee Claimants
- Naturalised Canadian Citizens who have been living in Canada for 5 years or less
Certification
Basic Security Guard Training: Certificate on Basic Security Training that prepares the client to pass the Basic Ministry Test for Security Guards and apply for license.
Esthetics and Wellness Training Certification and related certification:
- Makeup Certificate
- Eyelash Extensions
- Introduction to Skincare
- Chemical & Mechanical Exfoliation
- Laser Theory
- Manicure & Pedicure
- Hair Technique & Styles
- Lash Lift and Tint
What supports will be provided?
- Tuition cost
- Licensing cost
- Employment Standards Training
- Health and Safety Training
- Digital Literacy Training
- Industry specific language training
- Customer service
- Volunteer placement to gain work experience (for Security Guard Training)
- Cost of tools/miscellaneous needed to start the job
What is the format of the Training?
The training will follow a blended approach, both virtual/online AND in-person. The skills training (Basic Security Guard and Esthetics and Wellness will be hosted at our partner Training Centres/School and classes will be small, and in-person following public health guidelines)
How to Register?
The participant must be referred by their Caseworker. We DO NOT accept self-referrals.
