Background
In 2018, ACSA trusteed a domain specific pilot project called Helping Newcomers Work initiated by private sponsors themselves. The goal of this platform is to increase the capacity of private sponsors to help refugees find the best job by having easy access to top quality information and advice. Helping Newcomers Work is a digital hub that provides support to private sponsors and other volunteers, as they seek to help refugee newcomers find employment in Canada. It talks about where to begin, elements of an employment strategy, and how one might define “success”. Its posts not only identify issues and opportunities, but also provide information and suggestions about the job search process, types of work to consider, training programs, and upcoming opportunities.
Before becoming a project of ACSA, the Helping Newcomers Work initiative was founded by two individuals, Jim Shenkman and Helga Breier, both of whom were involved in private sponsorship of refugee newcomers.
